» .(moeglin-delcroix 273)

Les Suisses Mort. (text in German and English)

Frankfurt: Museum fur Moderne Kunst, 1991.

Octavo, 99 pages with 621 black and white photographic illustrations. Printed wrappers.

- First edition. Boltanski explains his choice of the Swiss: "In previous works I used photographs representing Jewish school children, but for this body of work which is linked to the tradition of vanitas I needed a group of people with a perfectly neutral resonance. Tragically, ‘Jewish" and "dead" are two ideas that fit too well together ... The Swiss, on the contrary, are not at all linked with the idea of a terrible fate. As a group, their destiny seems more universal, and thus, in a certain way, more dreadful".

Dibbets, Jan.

Roodborst Territorium/Sculptuur 1969. Robin Redbreast Territory / Sculpture 1969. Domaine d’un rouge-gorge/Sculpture 1969. (text Dutch, English and French).

Cologne/New York: König/ Seth Siegelaub, 1970. Large octavo, 32 pages. Illustrated wrappers.

- First edition.

Rufen bis zur Erschöpfung (to shout until exhaustion)

Zürich: Edition Howeg, 1972. Black cardboard box (3 x 19,5 x 27) with colophon page pasted on top of box. The box contains 5 original (very enlarged) photographs pasted on black cloth covered boards; 2 black cloth covered boards with on the left side of the page reproduced pages (83 + 104) from Georg Buchners Lenz., while parts of these texts have been copied in handwriting by Gerz on the right hand side of the page; 1 black cloth covered board with pasted on colophon page, here numbered and signed in pen by Gerz.

- First edition. One of 30 numbered and signed copies. In one fragment of Büchner’s text that is reproduced here, we read: "Gegen Abend wurde Oberlin zu einem Kranken nach Bellefosse gerufen. - „Was denn, mein Lieber?"

"Lenz" is written in 1835 and was left unfinished in draft form, though perhaps relatively near completion. The text is a biographical narrative about the Sturm und Drang author Jakob Michael Reinhold Lenz (1751-1792) and his stay of nineteen days (20 January until 8 February 1778) in the Ban de la Roche in the Vosges with the Pietist pastor and philanthropist Johann Friedrich Oberlin (1740-1826)."Lenz" has been celebrated as one of the most innovative narratives in German literature and has inspired a number of literary pathographies from the age of Expressionism to various modernist and post-modernist authors. The text has also provided the script for several films and inspired Gerz here for his Rufen bis zur Erschöpfung.

Reproduced printed and handwriten text and a sequence of photographic images create this complex and intriguing work that refers to vocal sound and ‘silence’.
