Le Gac, Jean.

Messages Personnels. Art Information of ...No. 6.

Duesseldorf: Mediacontact - Dietmar Kirves, 1971.

Folio, 12 pages, 4 photographic illustrations. Printed stapled wrappers.

- First edition. One of 200 numbered and signed copies.A very interesting and early publication, preceding  Les Cahiers and Le Récit.  It is highly probable also that this publication, published in Germany, is a t the origin of Le Gac’s invitation to participate at the 1972 Documenta in Kassel. The theme of these ’messages personnels’, anticipates the ‘narrative’ aspects of Les Cahiers and Le Récit. Two of the photographs in the Art information...., will be reproduced in Le Récit as well as the French text of the ‘messages personnels’.

Hamburg: Edition Hosmann, 1972.

Quarto, 16 pages, numerous illustrations + 5 inserted 'added pieces'. Light brown printed wrappers. Fine.

- First edition. One of 30 numbered, signed and inscribed copies with 5 'added pieces':

2. One original color photograph (8 x 8 cm), stamped on the rear, representing the cabin that is referred to in the article Les activités Mystérieuses de Florent Max.
3. A silk screened and folded bag, signed, numbered and stamped by Le Gac. The bag used for  'the camouflage des cailloux' was published in an edition of 60 copies.

5. Invitation card for the exhibition Jean le Gac/ Florent Max, Paris, December 1971. An exhibition where the name  Florent Max appeared for the first time.
Some words and part of the reproduced texts are whitened out and replaced by the handwritten name  Florent Max. Long, Richard.

Sculpture by Richard Long made for Martin & Mia Visser Bergeijk.

(Berlin): Fernsehgalerie Gerry Schum, (1969).Thin oblong quarto, unpaginated, 7 photographic plates, Illustrated wrappers.

- First edition. One of 500 copies of this early publication by Richard Long. The rear prints the following very interesting text: “Richard Long’s ‘sculpture for Martin and Mia Visser’ was conceived for the purpose of photographic reproduction. Richard Long made a system of trenches, which was created according to special camera views. Seen from these camera views relations become evident between marks in the landscape such as stone-walls, water-falls, lanes and Long’s trenches. The collectors Martin and Mia Visser aquired Richard Long’s work as a photographic reproduction for publication in an edition of 500 issues. According to Richard L,ong’s idea the photographs in hand do not have the function of adocumentation: It is the ‘sculpture made for Martin and Mia Visser’.”

It is interesting again to read Anne Moeglin Delcroix (Sur le Livre d’artiste pages 300-301) about this book and the controversy that exists around this book.

If Ruscha’s Twenty Six Gasoline Stations (1963) stands at the beginning of the history of the artist’s book, is it this book, not only the first artists’ book by Richard Long, but also the first artists’ book that is declared to be a work of art in itself.
